Overview

The Mizuno Pro S-1 is a compact, single-piece forged muscle-back iron for skilled ball strikers. Reviewers agree on the looks: a small head, slim topline, very little offset and a satin finish that cuts glare, which makes it a classic Mizuno blade at address. Most testers also rate the feel highly and call it soft and responsive, though a couple found it on the numb or unremarkable side.

Off-centre strikes are where the S-1 asks the most of you. Most testers saw mishits lose noticeable distance and accuracy. Players who hit the centre of the face get workability and a flight that holds steady from shot to shot.

Testers disagreed on how high it launches and how much it spins. Results ranged from a low, penetrating flight with low spin to higher launch with plenty of spin, so a fitting is worth it.

What reviewers like

  • Clean, compact blade look with thin topline and minimal offset
  • Satin finish reduces glare at address
  • Soft, responsive forged feel with clear strike feedback
  • Crisp yet muted sound on centred strikes
  • Easy to shape shots and flight down for control

Watch out for

  • Low forgiveness; off-centre hits lose distance and accuracy
  • Small head can look intimidating to less skilled players

Who it suits

It suits scratch and low-handicap players, and elite amateurs who find the centre of the face consistently and want feel, workability and control. Players who need more help can combine it with the S-3 in the long irons.
