Overview

The Mizuno Pro S-4 is a forged-look players' iron that replaces the S-3 in the Signature Series. Testers mostly agree on a compact, classic Mizuno head with a thin topline. They also like the solid, refined feel and the clean sound. The flight is a little higher than usual for this type of iron, which makes the long irons easier to get up in the air.

It is built for control, not distance. Several testers found it shorter than rival irons, which they link to its traditional lofts. Strikes from the middle of the face give a tight, predictable dispersion and the head can be worked both ways.

Testers don't agree on how forgiving it is: some call it the friendliest head in the series, while others say mishits are punished. Spin also splits opinion, especially in the long irons.

What reviewers like

  • Classic compact shape with a thin topline at address
  • Solid, refined Mizuno feel with clear feedback and a clean sound
  • Higher-than-usual launch helps get the long irons airborne
  • Workable with tight, predictable dispersion on good strikes
  • Sole design gives clean turf interaction

Watch out for

  • Gives up distance to rivals because of traditional lofts
  • Small profile may not inspire confidence in less consistent strikers
  • More offset than the S-3, which doesn't help players who miss left
  • High price

Who it suits

It suits consistent ball-strikers from scratch to single figures who want classic looks, feel and control. Mid handicappers will probably be better off with a more forgiving model.
